What is diversity? How can we engage our children and students regarding this topic? Well, let’s figure it out together. The first step is to understand what the term “diversity” means.
Diversity, in the broadest sense of the word means different, variety, assortment. In the classroom, in the community, in the church, in the world, people as a whole are diverse. There is diversity in our eye colors, skin colors, hair types and color, foods we eat, clothes we wear, reading ability, athletic skills and preference, height and weight, religious beliefs etc. For this article, I will focus on cultural diversity.
How do we change the current climate that we are in? One that views some people as being less important or more important than others? You may have a different view point than mine, but for me, I am starting with our kids. Remember the song Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston? She starts off by stating a belief that the children are our future. She then suggests that we teach them well and let them lead the way. That’s my approach too. If we can begin with our babies and impress upon them the various beauties that we all possess inside, then maybe there is hope for our future generation.
Walk with me a bit. Let’s do an experiment together. Get a sheet of paper, pencil and some crayons. First, draw a rainbow at the top of your paper. Now, color the rainbow using all 8 colors. Second, draw another rainbow and very important, do not color this second rainbow. Now, just in case you were unable to complete the activity above, I have included an example for you😃.
Question: Which rainbow do you prefer and why? Chances are, you prefer the first rainbow with the varying colors. Why, because it’s more interesting. It’s more fun to look at. It allows for a longer and better conversation. You can blend the colors together and make new colors. I could go on but I think you get the point😉.
This is the experiment I use with my kids to get the conversation started. The same way we find the colored rainbow more interesting because of it’s variety and its diversity, it’s the same way the world is more interesting because of the variety of its people or better yet, its diversity! Aha!
If we remove any of the colors of the rainbow, it becomes less beautiful, less interesting. Its impact is also diminished. It’s the same with people. All race and ethnic groups are needed and all are important. Because if we remove any group, then life becomes less beautiful and less interesting.
So, I’ll do my part and start with our future generation. After all, when we get old, they will be the ones making decisions for our world and wouldn’t we all want to live in a world that’s as colorful, diverse and beautiful as the rainbow with all its colors and all their differences?
